Have students in your classes dropped out because they couldn’t afford the textbook? Have you been shocked at the cost of textbooks for the classes that you teach? Would you like to help but don’t know exactly how to proceed? Learn about potential solutions by attending a one-hour workshop on either October 20th or October 21st and possibly receive a $200 stipend for your efforts!
Did You Know:
  • The high cost of some course materials can impede students’ academic success.
  • The College Board estimates that the average student can expect to pay $1,200 for textbooks and supplies in 2013-14.
  • The cost of textbooks is rising at a rate of 4 times inflation.
  • 7 out of 10 students do not purchase a required textbook during their academic career because of cost.
Open Access Textbooks
Open access textbooks (textbooks written by qualified academics made freely available) may help alleviate the burden of some textbook costs for students. Open textbooks are full, real textbooks licensed to be freely used, edited, and distributed. Increasingly, faculty members all across the country are adopting open textbooks as one way to address this crisis.
What You Can Do
Attend the Open Textbook workshop — a one-hour session where you can learn about open access textbooks and discover what is available in your field. You will have the opportunity to write a short review of an open textbook that will be published on the Internet. Your review will benefit other faculty considering open textbooks. You will receive a $200 stipend for your participation and written review. Faculty can attend on Tuesday, October 20, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm or Wednesday, October 21, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.
