International Year of Chemistry logo

Chemistry -- Our life, our future

The Cleveland State University Michael Schwartz Library, in partnership with the CSU Chemistry Department, will host events, including presentations and an exhibit, through February to launch and celebrate the International Year of Chemistry 2011. These events will highlight the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of human kind.
Experts in the field of chemistry will make presentations in the Michael Schwartz Library (first floor), located in Rhodes Tower, at 1860 East 22nd Street. All events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday, January 26; 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Dr. Dwight Chaser, Presenting
"Chemistry is for the Birds"

Dr. Dwight Chasar, American Chemical Society Tour Speaker, Research Scientist, and Ornithologist will present an illustrated lecture titled "Chemistry is for the Birds." The chemical pigments that give birds color, the chemicals that birds use for survival in the wild, chemicals that nearly extirpated raptors, and the use of stable isotopes to understand bird migration will be discussed. From the simplicity of bird poop to the complexity of bird DNA analysis, chemistry is playing a big role in understanding bird dynamics. This will replace Joshua Montague's presentation on the chemistry of making chocolate.

Wednesday, February 9; 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Dr. Helen Mayer, Research and Development Manager for Applied Sciences Group, GrafTech International; Archivist/Historian for the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society, will give a talk entitled: "100 Years of Chemistry in Cleveland"(replacing Dr. Joe Gorse's talk). In 2009, the Cleveland Section of the American Chemical Society celebrated 100 years of association with the national American Chemical Society. The Cleveland Section is noted for the number of historical events in chemistry that happened here. The section has been honored by six Chemical Historical Landmarks which will be featured in this lecture.--This event replaces Dr. Joe Gorse's talk titled, "BioDiesel at Baldwin-Wallace College: Making Fuel from Used French Fry Grease," which has been canceled.
